It’s finally here!! People often ask me, “What do you pack when you go on one of your cross-continent adventures?” Sometimes I can share with them the list that I use. But it’s a little bit outdated. So I’ve put together a downloadable list of the things that I take on my adventures!
Here’s a few things to remember about the list:
- You’ll want to customize this list. For example, I haven’t taken a toy box in years, but it’s still included here. Also, you’ll want to add your own special gear. I’ll often bring along my mp3 player (ancient as it is!) and cozyphones even though they’re not on the list.
- This list was made with a 2-4 week trip in mind. Some things aren’t all that necessary for an overnight trip (for example, extra glasses – for one day I might be able to survive, but I wouldn’t want to be without glasses if my main pair broke in the first few days of a three week trip. Can you say, “Disaster!”)
- There’s a wide variety of food listed here. That’s because I’m trying to satisfy up to 10 different palates at once. So while I may eat oatmeal for breakfast, someone else wants to mix bran flakes and Cheerios in their bowl with a dash of shredded wheat and raisins (I kid you not…)
- I have included the gear for both sleeping in my van and also in a tent or hammock. Usually, the latter stays home unless I can’t use the van for some reason.
- How do I organize everything? I try to keep similar things together. For example, all of the breakfast stuff goes in one box, and it’s very conveniently placed in the back of the van. I can just pull it out when we’re all still half-asleep and not have to think beyond that and the milk from the cooler.
- You might also notice a lack of sweets on the list. We’ve never done a lot of sugar, and we do less of it now (personal preference, mostly). So add in a few candy bars if you want to.
