The New Testament contains several references where we are told to clothe ourselves. I’ve heard of people who intentionally put on the armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-18). But I’ve heard of very few who take the other references to heart and intentionally ‘clothe themselves’ each day.
Here is a list of 15 things the Bible tells us to clothe ourselves in – forgive me for using the Amplified Bible here, but I thought it helps illustrate each verse well.
1. The Full Armor of Light
“The night [this present evil age] is almost gone and the day [of Christ’s return] is almost here. So let us fling away the works of darkness and put on the [full] armor of light.”
Romans 13:12
2. The New Self
“and put on the new self [the regenerated and renewed nature], created in God’s image, [godlike] in the righteousness and holiness of the truth [living in a way that expresses to God your gratitude for your salvation].”
Ephesians 4:24
3. The Full Armor of God
“Put on the full armor of God [for His precepts are like the splendid armor of a heavily-armed soldier], so that you may be able to [successfully] stand up against all the schemes and the strategies and the deceits of the devil.”
Ephesians 6:11
4. Belt of Truth, Breastplate of Righteousness, Shoes of the Gospel of Peace
“So stand firm and hold your ground, having tightened the wide band of truth (personal integrity, moral courage) around your waist and having put on the breastplate of righteousness (an upright heart), and having strapped on your feet the gospel of peace in preparation [to face the enemy with firm-footed stability and the readiness produced by the good news]. Above all, lift up the [protective] shield of faith with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.”
Ephesians 6:14-17
4. A Heart of Compassion, Kindness, Humility, Gentleness, and Patience
“So, as God’s own chosen people, who are holy [set apart, sanctified for His purpose] and well-beloved [by God Himself], put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience [which has the power to endure whatever injustice or unpleasantness comes, with good temper];”
Colossians 3:12
6. Unselfish Love
“Beyond all these things put on and wrap yourselves in [unselfish] love, which is the perfect bond of unity [for everything is bound together in agreement when each one seeks the best for others].”
Colossians 3:14
5. The Breastplate of Faith and Love; the Hope and Confident Assurance of Salvation
“But since we [believers] belong to the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet, the hope and confident assurance of salvation.”
1 Thessalonians 5:8
Now that’s something to think about while you’re getting dressed tomorrow morning!
